Your wood-burning heater is only as good as the fuel you use! Maintaining the proper moisture content in wood is crucial for preventing moisture-related issues.
A moisture meter helps you select the right wood to burn, allowing you to reduce soot, smoke, and carbon build up. This simple to use tool has four hardened steel pins that are pushed into the wood, or other materials to be measured to obtain a reading of moisture content on the LCD screen. The pins are protected by a safety cover when not in use.

Ideally, the moisture of the wood for closed combustion fireplaces needs to be at 18% or below. Use the MD-4G Moisture Meter to test the wood moisture level percentage before using it in your fireplace. Excess moisture may result in the faster degradation of the wood, so it is important to take meter readings.
To use simply push the metal pins as deep as possible into the wood. Electrical current travels between the pins, measuring resistance and converting it to a percentage of moisture. These meters read between the pins and as deep as the length of the pins.
Take readings in several places near the edges as well as the along the center of the wood. It is recommend to cut the wood in half and take a reading in the centre of the wood, as wood that looks dry on the outside can still have a high moisture content inside. Use the highest reading as the moisture level.
